If you’re reading this from your patio in Mesa, Gilbert, Chandler, or Queen Creek today, you’ve probably noticed the sudden change. It’s Sunday, April 26th, and we just got hit with our first real "welcome to summer" heat spike. We’re pushing 90°F+ today, and the UV index is sitting at a punishing 10.
If you were out yesterday, you also saw that classic Arizona dust blowing through the San Tan Valley.
For pool owners, this combination of high heat, extreme UV rays, and fresh dust is a triple threat. If you don't adjust your chemistry and filtration today, you might be staring at a green swamp by Tuesday.
Let's talk about how to protect your investment and keep your water clear without losing your cool.
1. The Invisible Thief: UV Chlorine Burnout
When the UV index hits 10, it’s not just your skin that needs protection. UV rays are the primary cause of chlorine degradation.
Without a stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid or CYA), the sun can literally "burn out" up to 90% of your pool's free chlorine in just two hours. Even with stabilizer, this 90-degree spike increases the chemical demand. As the water temperature rises, bacteria and algae start to grow faster, which means your chlorine has to work twice as hard.
If your chlorine levels drop to zero for even a few hours during a high-UV day like today, algae will take hold.
The Fix:
- Check your Free Chlorine levels immediately.
- Ensure your CYA levels are between 30-50 ppm (or slightly higher if you use a salt system). Think of CYA as "sunglasses for your pool": it shields the chlorine molecules so they can stay in the water longer.
- FAS-DPD Accuracy: Instead of guessing if a strip is "pink" or "light pink," you count drops. The water goes from vibrant pink to clear. It’s precise down to 0.2 ppm.
- CYA Testing: It uses a turbidity test (the black dot test) which is much more reliable than the color-matching on a strip.
- Complete Control: It gives you the exact data you need to know if you're actually protected against the 10 UV index.
- Sure-Flow Turbine: This design allows it to suck up sand and fine dust without clogging: exactly what we need after a windstorm.
- Manueverability: It has a two-wheel design that helps it navigate tight corners and climb walls where dust likes to settle.
- Variable Speed Ready: It works perfectly with modern pumps, ensuring you get a deep clean even at lower, energy-saving speeds.
- "My pool is 92 degrees and my chlorine is 0, what do I do?"
- "How do I backwash my filter after a dust storm?"
- "Why is my Pentair Rebel not moving?"
- Test your water (ideally with a Taylor K-2006).
- Clear the dust (the Pentair Rebel is your best friend here).
- Boost your run time to account for the extra heat and UV.
2. Why Test Strips Fail in the Heat (Use the Taylor K-2006)

A lot of DIYers in the East Valley rely on those quick "dip-and-read" test strips. Usually, they’re fine for a quick check, but during a heat spike, they can be dangerously inaccurate.
Strips often struggle to accurately measure CYA and can give "false negatives" or "false positives" for Free Chlorine when the water is reacting to high heat and dust. To truly manage your pool like a pro, you need a titration kit.
I always recommend the Taylor K-2006 Service Complete Kit.
Why is the Taylor K-2006 better?
3. Handling Yesterday’s Dust with the Pentair Rebel

Yesterday’s wind brought a fresh layer of fine desert dust into pools across Chandler and San Tan Valley. This dust isn't just an eyesore; it clogs filters and provides a "bed" for algae to grow on.
If you’re still manually vacuuming or using an old-school suction cleaner that gets stuck on the steps, this heat spike is going to be a struggle.
The Pentair Rebel Suction Side Cleaner is a workhorse for East Valley pools.
If you’re tired of seeing a "dust cloud" on the floor of your pool every time the wind blows, the Rebel is a game-changer.
