An operating Arizona pool and a pool closed for a prolonged freeze need different plans. Do not lower the water below the skimmer while continuing normal circulation.
Choose the operating plan
Pentair’s Sun Belt guidance notes that many southwestern pools remain open, while freezing weather can still damage equipment. Decide with your pool professional whether the system will continue operating or undergo a complete model-specific winter closure. Weather, power reliability and plumbing layout matter.
For a pool kept operating
- Maintain sanitation checks, water level and debris removal. Lower seasonal demand does not eliminate testing.
- Confirm the automation temperature input and freeze settings according to its manual. Know which pumps, valves, features and exposed lines are actually protected; pump-only freeze protection is not a promise for the entire system.
- Have a plan for power loss or failed circulation. Do not rely on an internet weather service if connectivity is unavailable, and do not operate equipment already frozen or damaged.
For a complete closure
Arrange a qualified, equipment-specific plan covering exposed plumbing, pump, filter, heater, sanitizer, features and cover. Water level, draining, plugs and any permitted antifreeze depend on the system and surface. Do not apply a generic compressor, shop-vac or automotive-antifreeze recipe.
Keep a restart record
Document what was isolated or drained, removed parts, valve positions and required startup checks. Before opening, restore the designed flow paths, inspect equipment and establish proper water chemistry. Keep barrier and cover protection effective during the closed period; an unattended pool remains a drowning hazard.
