A heater replacement is a gas/electrical and hydraulic installation, not a homeowner disconnect-and-reconnect job. Correct selection includes fuel, flow, venting and controls.
Collect the existing installation
- Photograph the heater nameplate, entire pad, inlet/outlet plumbing and visible venting without removing covers. Identify natural gas, propane, electric resistance or heat pump.
- Write down the purpose: pool temperature maintenance, occasional spa heating or season extension. Provide pool/spa volume and desired use pattern; a larger BTU label alone does not select the right unit.
- List pump, filter, automation and sanitizer models. Ask the installer to document compatible flow, plumbing arrangement and control integration for the exact replacement.
Compare complete installation proposals
A gas-heater proposal should address fuel supply capacity, combustion/venting, clearances, water-side bypass requirements, electrical/bonding work and required permits. Heat pumps have different power and airflow requirements. Do not convert fuels or reuse an old connection simply because it appears to fit.
Require commissioning evidence
Ask for the model/serial number, manufacturer startup checklist, safe combustion and gas-leak verification where applicable, stable water flow, controls demonstration and warranty requirements. Confirm the displayed temperature against a reliable independent reading.
Protect the new equipment
Review water chemistry and sanitizer placement with the installer. Ask how to shut the system down safely, what error information to record and who performs periodic service. Keep the manual with the installation record. Never approve bypassed safety devices or a heater that has been submerged without proper inspection.
