A variable-speed conversion should deliver the required flow with an efficient verified schedule. Choosing an equivalent advertised horsepower and guessing low RPM can leave attached equipment without enough flow.
Inventory every operating mode
- Record pool/spa volume, pump/filter/heater/sanitizer models, pipe sizes, cleaning system and water features. Photograph the plumbing and automation.
- Ask the installer to document required flow for filtration and each connected device, plus the system’s safe maximum. Heater, salt cell, cleaner and spa modes may need different programs.
- Compare compatible pump performance against system resistance and flow requirements. Filter capacity and suction-system limits matter as much as the motor label.
Commission the schedule
For each operating mode, record the selected speed or flow, run period, measured power where available and whether the connected device works correctly. Check successful priming, stable returns, cleaner travel, heater enable and sanitizer flow indication. Low-speed savings are useful only if water quality and required equipment function are maintained.
Verify controls and safety
Have a qualified installer confirm electrical supply, GFCI/grounding/bonding as applicable, automation compatibility and startup/shutdown behavior. Recheck freeze protection and restart after power loss in the exact pump/control manuals. Do not copy a wiring layout or controller address from a different model.
Measure the result
Calculate energy from actual watts and run hours, then compare with a documented prior operating schedule and the applicable electricity rate. Do not promise a payback from a generic percentage. Keep clean filter pressure and RPM together so later pressure comparisons remain useful.
